I would advise checking the timing marks all line up before proceeding with VCDS - if that is then still the case i would look at adjusting the fuel pump. Basically i had to retard my pump 1 tooth to achieve the correct timing; this meant that even though the cam and flywheel marks lined up the fuel pump lock pin would not - even though timing
I was wondering what the expected cost of replacing belts for 2002 T4 2.5 tdi? I don't do many miles as it is only used during the summer months as a camper. It's been driven about 10000 miles since last belt change 5 years ago, so chances are that belt is probably fine but I feel nervous to leave it unchanged.

I put everything back together and cranked the car and it started right up. It immediately started sputtering and then died. I cranked it several times, but got nothing. Tighten camshaft gear locking tool 2 to 70 Nm. Apply a torque of 80 Nm to camshaft gear in clockwise direction (12) . Tighten camshaft gear bolt to 150 Nm + 90°. Remove camshaft gear locking tool 2 (12) . Fit camshaft bearing cap 9 using a suitable sealant. NOTE: Camshaft bearing cap bolts MUST only be used once. ym4D.
