1 Answer. The short answer to your question is yes, an EF lens can be used on a crop-sensor (EF-S) Canon camera. The longer answer is that EF-S lenses are designed for crop-sensor lenses, the 's' denotes a smaller image circle, but it's otherwise a compatible mount. So, lenses designed for full frame (EF) will also work on your camera.
In summary, EF lenses are compatible with both Canon full-frame and APS-C cameras, while EF-S lenses are only compatible with Canon APS-C cameras. When using EF lenses on an APS-C camera, the smaller sensor will crop the image and effectively increase the focal length of the lens. EF-S lenses are designed specifically for APS-C cameras and do
\$\begingroup\$ There's actually no performance hit when using EF or EF-S lenses on Canon EF-M or RF mount cameras. The EF-M protocol is exactly the same as the EF protocol, only the registration distance and shape of the mounting bayonet is different. The RF protocol is an enhanced version.
It also provides a shallow depth of field, allowing you to blur the background to focus attention on the subject. Has rounded aperture blades. Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 STM. Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM. Similar to the number of aperture blades, rounded blades affect the way the light gets through to the sensor.
The main difference between Canon EF and EF-S lenses lies in their compatibility with different sensor sizes. EF lenses are designed to cover the full-frame sensor size, which means they can be used on both full-frame and APS-C sensor cameras. On the other hand, EF-S lenses are specifically designed to cover the smaller APS-C sensor area and

This means that the image of the subject on the sensor
The main question here is if we know if future APS-C mirrorless from Canon (i.e. the upcoming M50 upgrade) will feature an RF mount or continue with the EF-M mount. Canon's made no mention of this. M can use all EF-M, and EF/EF-s with adapter. R can use all RF, and EF/EF-S with adapter. Until Canon says different, I'd expect this to continue.
An EF 50mm and an EF-S/EF-M 85mm will NOT produce similar field of view. Not even close. Neither will an EF 85mm and an EF-S/EF-M 50mm. If she buys an EF 50mm and an ef-s 50mm, they will both look the same when used on the same camera. Mike Sowsun.
By "Canon M" I assume you mean "EF-M". Those are the lenses for Canon's EOS M series mirrorless cameras. And yes, they're only usable on EOS M cameras.
The EF-S Mount was released in 2003 alongside the first Digital Rebel series camera. From there the mount would be found on ALL APS-C DSLRs. ALL of Canon's APS-C DSLRs are FULLY COMPATIBLE with EF lenses. EF-S lenses ARE COMPLETELY INCOMPATIBLE with Full Frame & APS-H DSLRs and EOS AF SLRs.
It also provides a shallow depth of field, allowing you to blur the background to focus attention on the subject. Has rounded aperture blades. Canon EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 III USM. Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS II. Similar to the number of aperture blades, rounded blades affect the way the light gets through to the sensor.
