The hidden blade upgrades are crazy good - you get an extra few hundred damage each time. It's more of a one use think, though.
Ofc, later every single Assassin had his own hidden blade (even Thorvald Hjaltason, Assassin who lived in Svealand during 9th century and opposed Styrbjorn). Of course, there is another option - that AC writers didn't even consider at all about that connection between Origins and Odyssey and leave all this to us to make theories :D

In order to make the hidden blade stronger, you both need to level up. The main use of the hidden blade in Origins is for stealth kills and you'll need to make sure your level is higher than the enemies. Explore the map and complete quests to increase your XP. So I played this on a free weekend awhile back. Huge fan of origins and odyssey. I had trouble getting into it, only got a little past getting the hidden blade and attacking the first "boss."
